The most recent issue of “Pregnancy and Newborn Magazine” had an article about coping during labor and who will be at your birth.
I love that they suggested women use a doula during their labor. What I don’t love is that they suggest women need to have people around them during labor that “don’t mind seeing them at their worst.”
Let’s remind women that who they are during labor is their best self. Strong, powerful, purposeful, beautiful…those are words to describe a laboring mother working hard to bring her baby into the world.
Labor doesn’t bring out the worst in women. It brings out the best…their baby. Labor is painful, difficult work. This we know. Instead of telling a Mom she will be at her worst in labor, we should be reminding her just how amazing her body is to be doing such important work.
